Is the local extinction of Pinna nobilis facilitating Pinna rudis recruitment?

چکیده

Until the late 2010s spiny fan-mussel Pinna rudis shared habitat in many Mediterranean sites with endemic nobilis, which dominated abundance but that has gone locally extinct most of its distribution area due to a recent widespread disease outbreak. In Columbretes Islands Marine Reserve (NW Mediterranean) both species coexisted until 2017, when P. nobilis populations completely disappeared. spring 2021 we revisited 7 permanent plots covering 1,485 m2 had been previously monitored during period from 2005 2009. We found although previous studies described as stable low recruitment rates, after 2017 increased comparison 2005-2009. At least two cohorts recruits (~3 and ~1 year age) were be within well other areas throughout archipelago, colonizing occupied by nobilis. hypothesize benefited local extinction sibling probably result reduced interspecific competition. The ecological role once played mainly dominant species, might now taken over rudis, whose could grow oncoming years.

Mitochondrial DNA Reveals Genetic Structuring of Pinna nobilis across the Mediterranean Sea

Pinna nobilis is the largest endemic Mediterranean marine bivalve. During past centuries, various human activities have promoted the regression of its populations. As a consequence of stringent standards of protection, demographic expansions are currently reported in many sites. The aim of this study was to provide the first large broad-scale insight into the genetic variability of P. nobilis i...

Effects of local and global factors in the Pinna illusion

The Pinna illusion (Pinna & Brelstaff, 2000) consists of two concentric rings of micropatterns that appear to counter-rotate when the observer moves towards the stimulus. There have been several reports that the illusion is stronger when the retinal expansion is produced by observer self-motion than when produced on a computer screen without observer self-motion. In fact, we found that the illu...

Assesing Heavy Metals in the Marine Bivalve Pinna Nobilis in the Balearic Islands (western Mediterranean)

Heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb and Zn) concentration were determined in the marine bivalve Pinna nobilis along the Balearic Islands, comparing a protected area with two sites with strong anthropogenic influence. Analyses of Cabrera and Mallorca indicated that heavy metal concentration were generally higher in the most of samples, specially in Santa Maria bay (Cabrera, MPA), and Magaluf (Mallorca,...

The byssus threads of Pinna nobilis: A histochemical and ultrastructural study

The byssus of Pinna nobilis, the largest bivalve mollusc in the Mediterranean Sea, was investigated by histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). At low magnification, the byssus threads appeared distinctively elliptical in cross-section, with a typical size approaching 50 x 25 micron and a ...
